Responsible Gambling

Responsible Gambling

Gambling is addictive and habit-forming. Please gamble responsibly. The National Gambling Act (No. 7 of 2004) regulates gambling in South Africa and requires all operators to promote responsible gambling practices.

Know Before You Play

  • You must be 18 years or older to gamble. It is an offence to allow a person under 18 to gamble.
  • Gambling is entertainment — not a way to make money or solve financial problems.
  • The odds always favour the house. There is no guaranteed way to win.
  • Never gamble with money set aside for rent, food, bills, or other essential expenses.

Play Within Your Limits

  • Set a time and money limit before you start, and stick to it.
  • Take regular breaks — do not gamble in long sessions without stopping.
  • Do not chase your losses. Increasing your bets to recover losses leads to greater harm.
  • Avoid gambling when you are upset, stressed, depressed, or under the influence of alcohol.

Warning Signs of Problem Gambling

You may have a gambling problem if you:

  • Spend more time or money gambling than you intended.
  • Feel restless or irritable when trying to cut back or stop.
  • Use gambling to escape worry, stress, or difficult feelings.
  • Lie to family or friends about how much you gamble or how much you have lost.
  • Borrow money, sell possessions, or commit illegal acts to fund gambling.
  • Neglect work, studies, family, or personal responsibilities because of gambling.
  • Have tried to stop gambling but cannot.
